Water Supply Committee.

The usual monthly meeting of this body was held at the Borough Council Chambers last evening. There were present — His Worship tue Mayor (in the chair); Messrs McGowan, Hume : and Price. MINXTTEB. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. WATEtt STJPPLY TO THE HILLS. A deputation consisting of Messrs Tizard, E. H. Power, Osborne and Wavdell waited on the coiraiitlce. Mr Tizard stated that they had waited on the committoe to see if the mains could be laid along the top of the hills so that the residents in the higher portions of the district might have a fair share of the supply. It would also benefit the flat. Mr E. H. Power spoke on the poor supply of Block 27. Mr McGowa'n drew the attention of the deputation to the fact that what N they asked involved a. very large question. Besides the engineering question, they must bear in mind that the pipes would have to be taken through private ground, which would create a great deal of trouble. What they asked simply showed that the present demand exceeded the supply. Mr Price thought it would be quite impracticable to bring the water over the hills. 4 The Turacock said that there would be much better pressure when the new mains were laid down than at present. The Mayor pointed out what the deputation asked for would entail the laying down of about ten times as many pipes as at present, as the mains would be carried a long way from the centre of population. Mr Hume suggested that the committee should promise the residents of Mount Pleasant that if, when the new mains were laid down, and they could not get suffi. cient water up, the committee would lay down a larger pipe* for them. After some further desultory conversation the deputation withdrew, the committee promising to consider th* matte.'. APPLICATION FOR WATEB. An applVftuon was ie?d fr~m Mr John Scott, asking for the extension of the sub-main to ris house ' i Staley.g.r:.~et, ac the corner of Mackay street. The Tuncock informed the Committee that it would entail the laying down of ICO feet of pipes. Application granted. THE IBON PLATES. A letter was received from the Government Resident Engineer, Mr A. Aitken, asking wbat action the Committee had taken with reference to the water-race plates. The question was referred to the 'Finance .Committee. ■. SOLICITOUS. The Secretary said that a retainer appointing Messrs Macdonald and Miller solicitors to the Corporation had been prepared.

DEFAULTING BATEPAY.EI".S. The Secre.aiy said that there were £89 owing in rates, which could not be got without suing for. Nothing could be done until the retainer was signed by all the members of the Committee. THE AMENDMENT ACT. The amendments in "The Thames Water Supply Act, Amendment Act," were then considered seriatum. CIBCTJXAB. The Secretary stated that he had received a ciicular from Messrs Watson and Gow, iron founders, of Glasgow. That firm would supply pipes »t £7 per ton, for which they at present paid £11 2 a 6d per ton. FINANCE. , \ Accounts amounting to £177 were passed for payment. At present there was £969 9s 3d owing to the bank. "WOBKS COMMITTEE'S BEPOET. The report of this committee recommended that water be supplied to the Waiotahi Creek by means of a pipe from the town supply to a tank near schoolhouse. The cost would be about £100, and it was recommended that a small tax, say 5s per year, be made on residents. The Secretary stated that none of the residents were willing to pay the small rate.

This was all the business.
