Defence of the Colony.
Memorandum bt the Pbemieb.
The following is a memorandum sent by the Premier to his Excellency the Governor, for the purpose of being transmitted to the Home Authorities, in reply to the telegram received from the S«cretary for the Colonies, on the subject of the defence of the principal ports of New Zealand :—•
Sir George Grey presents hit respectful compliments to the Marquis of Normanby. The Now Zealand Ministers reply to her Majesty'B Government that the colony will undertake expense of proposed armament. Her Majesty may rest assured that her New Zealand subjects will, in the event of a crisis, loyally and resolutely in all respects do their duty to their Queen and their country. Sir George Grey requests that the Marquis of Normanby will be so good as at once to telegraph a copy of this memorandum to her Majesty's Government for their information. At sea, May 4.lß7B.—Herald.
