The following table—extracted from the .Registrar General's Report on the vital statistics.of the Boroughs of Auckland, Thames, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin and Hokitika for the month of March—gives the population, number of births and deaths, and proportion of deaths to the 1000 of population of etch borough:— r

It will bo observed that- the estimated population has been changed from last month, the present figures being taken from the census • returns just completed. In every instance but one the population shows an increase.. The exception is Dunedin, the population of which city was put down formerly as 23,365 ; now it ii stated as 22,491. This can be accounted for only on the ground that formerly the popula-

tion of Dunedin was over estimated, some of the suburbs, now separate municipalities, having perhaps been included. It is not probable that the population of Dunedin.has decreased. The population of the Thames Borough as gathered from last census is stated at 5,425; until recently, in the Registrar General's estimate it was 4,466; and some years ago it was set down at something over 8.C23. The nVimber now given is correct, having been derived from census returns just completed. .Taking it as correct, the death rate is unusually low, and shows that in spite of defective drainage and other disadvantages file Thames is a healthy district. ■-
