MULLEN.

(To the Editor of the ErMlxa STAB.)

Sib, —Having seen this plant spoken of in the Advertiser, I thought a few remarks to make known its virtues to the Thames public might not be out of place. This plant grows in height in England .from four to five feet, but here I have no doubt it will attain to eight feet, the climate being more suitable to its growth. Ist. Three ounces of the distilled water of the leaves and. lowers taken morning and evening for ten days regular is an excellent remedy for those troubled with an old cough, or in the first" stages of consumption. I do not say it will cure an old or long standing case, but greatly relieve the sufferer. 2nd. An oil made by infusing the flowers is good for those' suffering with piles or obstructions-of the bladder and the stoppage of water will find great relief. 3rd. A decoction of the root and leaves is good. for dissolving tumors and swellings of the throat; also the powder of the dried roots rubbed on the parts will dissolve boils and heal them. 4th. This plant is an annual, and when its growth is past and has produced its seeds it is of no more use in England ; but very likely here, as some other plants, it will not die out the first year, and if so, so much the better, to be able to go and pick leaves when required.—l am, &c, | if. Swtwiu, Farawai Head.
