The conference of Borough and County Councils interested in baring railway communication between Thames and Waikato is to take place this week. The concession granted by the Commissioner of Telegraphs amounts to this: Free telegrams between the different local bodies during the next few days to arrange preliminaries, and messages free—but not to interfere with the transmission of ordinary messages—during Friday next, the day on which the conference is to take place. The first part of the arrangement is a Tery good one. All preliminaries can be arranged by means of a few messages which will not interfere with the public service ; but on whicherer day the Conference takes place there may be inconvenience and delay, and the business of the public and the local bodies interested be rery materially affected*
Wo would suggest Hint the municipal authorities ask for tho uso of tho wires and necessary operators at tho stations required—say Thames, Hamilton, Cambridge, and other Wuikato and Waipa stations— for a couple of hours after the offices are closed fo the public. If there should be any difficulty in the way of overtime for the operators, that would be an insignificant item to be shared by the local bodies ; but we feel conrinced that to hare representatives of the different bodies attempting a conference while the ordinary business is proceeding will be found most unsatisfactory and inconvenient. The wire to Waikato has to carry the Auckland business, and there might be a press of work that would rery much tire the patience of the Mayors, County Chairmen and others expected to take part in the deliberations.
