RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Archibald and Alexander Campbell, two little boys, were charged with stealing one watch ratue £3, the. property of one William Johnson.

The children, who were evidently much frightened, did not answer to the charge. William Johnson, sworn, deposed-—I am a miner and work in the Messenger's claim, Messen Hill. I recollect the 18th inst. There is a smithy near the claim, and on the day in question I left my waistcoat, in a pocket of which was my watch, in the smithy. On returning the door was open and the watch gone. De tec tiro Brcnnan, sworn, deposed— On the morning of the 19th I went up to Messenger's Hill and in consequence of information received, I accused the two boys of stealing the watch. They at first denied, it but afterwards said

that a boy numed Harcourt had it. I took then* to Harcourt, when the two defendants admitted the offence. I saw the youngest boy subsequently go to a stump and take out the watch. The boys have a very bad character, as they steal the miners' crib, candies, fuse, and powder. Committed to the luduslriul School for a period of 7 yeara each, to be brought up in the Episcopalian faith. Court adjourned.
