AUCKLAND.
This day.
The Government have refunded the fine imposed on Captain Logan some time ago on account of overloading the Hero. This decision was arrived at because under the Australian certificate, which the District Judge refused to take cognizance of, no offence was .committed, and it has since been ascertained that New Zealand certificates are recognised in the Australian courts, therefore the Government consider New Zealand should reciprocate.
Sir George Grey and Mr Sheehan pro* ceeded to Waikato to-day.
Colonel Whitmore, at the Artillery Volunteer inspection last night, said the Premier had a scheme of harbor defence for the Colony of which he entirely approved. The Government intended to apply to the Imperial authorities for a number of 64-pounder converted rifled guns, the same as those aboard the Wolverine and Nymphe, These, in proper situations, would make the harbors impregnable to cruisers. It was intended to entrust them to the Artillery Volunteers and' encourage that branch of the
service.
