We hare been favored by Captain Fraser, Census Enumerator, with the following figures compiled from the census returns of the Borough and County of Thames and the Piako County. The Coromandel County was included in Captain Fraser's enumeration, but the returns from the sub-enumerators not having been received the census is still incomplete. We may state that the figures given below are all that are permitted to be communicated to the public press, the returns of live stock, land under cultivation and other information being reserved for the Regi§> trar-General: , * ■ - ■ BOBOUOH OF THAMES. Males. Females. Total. Borough . 28&0 2575. 5455 County 2807 2161 4988 66§7 4736 10,423 The above figures admit of very little scopo for comment or comparison. If we could have obtained the other information embraced by the census returns we might i have shown how much! progress has been made in the way of settlement, but such information is carefully withheld for manipulation first by the BegistrarGeneral, Mr W. E. E. Brown. When it has been dished up in that gentleman's usual elaborate style,in six or nine months' time we shall perhaps be a position to furnish the information to our readers. Regarding the items of population, however, we may state that the returns from the Borough and County lead- to the belief that the present census will show an increase. Unfortunately the Coromandel returns are not complete, and we are unable to institute a fair comparison, as on previous occasions of taking the census Coromandel has been included with the Thames. The population of the Thames and Coromandel in 1871 was 11,950; in 1874, 6969 males; 5303 females; total, 12,272. Now the total population of the Thames district, as shown by the present census, is. 10,423. It is not likely that the ' County of Coromandel, which includes Mercury and Kennedy's Bay, Wangapoa, ana other districts; will be less than two thousand; so that we believe the population of what may be designated as the Hauraki peninsula, embracing' Thames and Coromandel Counties, will show an increased population. This in the face of the' prevalent depression in mining must be regarded as satisfactory. Of course ia the Thames County there is a large Native population which is not taken into account. .
