THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O' CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3, 1878.
The news from Homo daily becomes more interesting and exciting. What with changes in the Ministry and the ebulitions of popular feeling, the Government and Parliament must have a lively time of it, and we can readily believe that there has not been so much excitement in England over a question of war since before the Crimea. The indications foreshadowed by the news to day are decidedly warlike. The Queen in a formal message to " her faithful Commons " has explained the reasons for calling out the reserves. The defection of Earl. Derby has been filled by the appointment of Earl Salisbury, while another <=cion of the Houso of Stanley has been called to the Cabinet, and Mr Gathorne Hardy ;has been raised to the peerage. Earl Salisbury has taken the earliest opportunity to place on record a protest against Kussh's obstinacy in not consenting to submit the terms of peace to the Congresi. Perhaps tba most ominous item of the news is that which says that the British Government have warned the Colonies to look to their defences. Had war not been imminent, this would scarcely have been deemed advisable, as it is calculated to disturb commercial affairs to a large exlent, and must have an injurious effect upon business. However, as it has been deemed necessary to advise the colonies of the probability of war, those colonies which are in a position to improve their defences will, no doubt, expedite the same with all speed, while those ports which are practically defenceless can only remain so. At any hour we may now be prepared to hear that war has bcendeclared. Hupsia appears to be inflexible: England determined.
