CHRISTCHURCH.
Monday.
Messrs Royse, Stead, and Co. write to the .Times denying that the Inchgreen and Cicero were chartered at 40s per ton, and sub-let for 30s, with a view of affecting the grain market; They say that the Inchgreen was chartered at 35s per ton, and that efforts to obtain freight at 35s failing, they reduced it to 30s. The vessel was then filled rapidly, and the Cicero was then chartered to load at 355, which they aver will pay well. This day* : Mr Clarke's report on the drainage of Christchurch was issued this morning: it is very voluminous. It strongly condemns the use of the rivers Avon or Heathcote for sewage. It also condemns Mr Car* ruthers' proposal to discharge the sewage by the present out-fall into the BTeathcote j Estuary. He confirms Mr CarrutbeiV opinion as to the desirability of underground sewers, and the necessity for a pumping station east of the Town Belt, but advocated the conveyance of. the sewage after being raised by pumps to the Corporation reserve on the sandhills, and the conversion of the latter into sewage form. He estimates the whole cost of the-scheme at about £190,000; the annual expenditure for interest and maintenance £12,100. The Drainage Board meet to-day to discuss the scheme. ; A three-roomed house and its contents were totally destroyed by fire this morning. __^__^___ — _
