WELLINGTON.
Saturday. A return has been prepared by order of tho Government showing the loss of Government property occasioned by. fire during the last ten years ; also the sums pdd for insurance during that period, with a view of ascertaining whether or not it would be advisable to insure all the Government buildings. It appears the total loss sustained by the Government through fire during the last ten years amounted to £44,360. The heaviest item was the Custom-house and Post-office at Auckland, the estimated loss of which was £25,000. Tho smallest was the Wellington railway station, burned about two months ago, whica was valued at, ( £360. The other items are the Auckland Lunatic Asylum, £16,500; Government Buildings* Picton, £1800; Government Buildings, Bleuhs.'.m, £32C9,. of which £2500 was insured, leaving the actual loss £7CO. The amounts of insurance paid during the ten years have been £6100. It is stated the Government consider it advisable partly to insure the larger and more valuable buildings to the extent of about half their,
value, Government I king half the risk. In the case of smuller buildings it is found it is not profitable to insure, that it pays better to take the risk of small losses. The Government Buildings at Wellington are insured for £25,0 CD.
