A STRANGE INTRUDER.

Becently, while tome of the passengers by the Island Lily for the Chatham Islands were at breakfast, they were ■tartled Vy a crash in the bulkhead of the cabin, ana the appearance of a horse's body. It seems that a heary Clydesdale mare had been slipped on Board the re'ssel by Mr Bitchie, and «was down the main hatch in charge of one of the hands. Something mast have frightened the animal, for she suddenly broke from the man holding her, and making her way over the cargo, charged through the bulkhead of the cabin, and was brought up by her haunches getting jammed in the timber forming the bulkhead. Her forefeet, landed on the cabin table, and dealt destruction among the crockery, besides scaring those below nearly out of their wits. They rushed on deck as ipeedily as possible, not knowing but what the frightened animal might force herself right through into the cabin. Captain Cooper was above at the time, and immediately went below to extricate the mare. After a considerable amount of manaomng she was got back into the hold, hairing sustained no further injury than a thorough fright and a few scratches. It is really a wonderful thing how she could hare forced herself through the small space there was between the top of -the cargo and the deck. We need \ scarcely add that the appearance of the cabin, which had just been tastefully done up and decorated, was by no means improred by the morning nsitor.—Ly ttelton Times.
