Presentation to J. H. Salmon.
The members of the Thames Stock Exchange met at 2 o'clock this afternoon for the purpose of preaenting their departing chairman, Mr J. H. Salmon, with a alight teatimonial of the esteem in which he was held by his brother brokers, on the ere of his departure to the Bay of Islands. There were present—Messrs Prater, Melhose, Gellion, Battle, Whitfiml, B; McDonald Scott, Hennelly and Salmon. ''
Mr Frater, the treasurer, said that it was unnecessary for him to explain the reason why they were met together. They were about to lose one of the oldest members of the Exchange, who had been their chairman, and moreover* was one of the oldest brokers in the place. A more honorable, straightforward man of business than Mr J.H. Salmon could not be found. When business had caused them to leave the Corner, Mr Salmon hed always been willing to give them the latest news of the markets. As chairman he had been impartial, and had always given them the benefit of his great experience. They all regretted his" departure, and wished they had the same opening. After referring to the willingness with which the members had subscribed to the" testimonial, he presented Mr Salmon with a handsome gold albert, accompanying the presentation with friendly wishes that Mr Salmon would enjoy long life and prosperity. - ■ " Mr R. McDonald Scott said a few words, concurring in everything Mr Frater had said. Mr Salmon had done a great deal towards the development of the field, and he heartily wished him 'success. . t " ; : \ _'_ '■-■'. :J Air Salmon, after thanking them for the present in a neat speech, disavowed the possession of the qualities which Mr Frater had ascribed to him. He spoke to some length regarding his action while a member of the Exchange, and referred to the abolition of the gold duty, saying it would certainly stop the Pump. He heartily reciprocated their good wishes. We regret that want of time and space prevents us from giving more than a very much condensed report of the proceedings- ".', '.
