A EPIiY TO JAMES CBAIG, Auctioneer; O HENEY ALLEY, Hikutaia. 2295 [advebtiseicrnt.] (To the Editor of the Evening Star.) SIB— In the interest of justice and honesty will you grant me space to state a few facts not generally knowa concerning the case of Baxter and McManus. According to the bill before the Court I was dealing with Mrs Baxter one month in the year '72, two months in '73, three months in '76; total, six months (not three years). ' In '74 I was out of a actuation; my house was closed up, with the exception of one child occasionally going to see after, the house, yet I am charged £14 for groceries the three months of 75 while at law. I had wholesale goods from Mr Pulleine, some of which lusted four months, yet I am billed for 171bs of sugar, l|lbs and 21bs of tea per week, while the» box of tea and bag of sugar ia , using in my house. What she puts down for one week would last a month in Mr Osborne's shop, where the best of goods are to be obtained. Summing up the time of dealing I find I was 22 months in all. She admits having got £66125. I hold proof and receipts .for £14 more, making £8012s. From Messrs Pullie«e and Leydon I bought £13 worth of groceries during this 22 months —to'al, £94 12s. I ask anyone not blinded by prejudice or dishonesty, to say, ought not that to be sufficient to keep a family of two or three persons in groceries at a shop where butter, bacon, eggs or cheese, was a rarity, as those who dealt there can prove; as also my book. I produced a pass-book in court which I swore Mrs Baxter sent me instead of my own, which her daughter got on the pretext of marking a payment. She swore she never got a book—that the one before the Court was the only one between us. Now, Mr Editor, mark this statement on outh. This book is dated January 22nd, 1876; bo, though I am dealing since '72, my first passbook begins in '76; my first receipt is Feb. '76, £410s ; •he owns £56 was paid previously. It is headed, " brought forward £43 " —from what is it brought forward ? If that book was fair or honest why deny its existence ? She told | Mrs O'Dowd her son Bobert was angry at John writing in it, and that a leaf was torn out. When I complained of her destroying my book, Mr O'Dowd said the book was not made away with : she bad it, all right. What must they. think of her swearing. she never got it ? But, Mr Editor, away with the pass-book business for the present. What about the books before the Court ? They are, I believe, well written, and in Bobert Baxter's hand-writing. Was ho in the shop when those goods were delivered ? No; he was constantly in an office. Who gave the goods P—he swore four different children. I say six persons—lst, Mrs Baxter, Harriet Spotter, Thomas, John, Ellen, James, and occasionally Bobert, very rarely. Where is the book containing the hand-writ-ing of those different, persons? Surely the lad who swore be only copied from others ought to be mode show the writing from which he entered goods. She swore she supplied me with goods while at law. Why she brings me thirty-five pounds in debt before the case happened $ how does her oath and that agree. Before lam done with Mrs Baxter I will prove to her that honesty is the best policy in the end. She need not come to borrow £20 or £12 when the £100 was awarded if her debt was just, or stand up in a Court after getting judgment for £40 and say she would take £20. I would not give her 20 pence. I will give what the strong arm of the law commands, and seek redress afterwards. I hold receipts for £93 for 22 months' groceries; ought Ibe compelled to live on Mrs Baxter ?—I am, &c., ■■Hi H. McMawot. ■^■MMBMHfcMBMBII^SIIiMW „-. „
