Mb Plant has requested the public to refrain from any expression of opinion at the meeting on Monday night regarding the legality of recent expenditure by the local bodies. The advice tendered is,, very good, and should be taken by the promoters of the meeting. Mr Plant gives as the reason, that a number of citizens have determined to test the question in a Court of law. There are other reasons why the meeting should not discuss the matter referred to. The Mayor and Councillors and County Chairman and County Councillors are invited to be present. Possibly they may accept the invitation should the third item in the programme be expunged, but it is scarcely to be expected that members of local bodies will attend public meetings simply to hear themselves abused and their acts criticised: The subject " lands for the people " is an exhaustive one, and the agitation now being fermented mayno doubt will —be productive of good. Meetings of a public character, by whomsoever called, will probably conduce to form a healthy. public opinion—a thing very much wanting in this district—and we would not say a word to disparage the proposed, movement on Monday night. We quite endorse and second Mr Plant's manifesto, however. If the local bodies have been guilty of illegal expenditure, let it be submitted to the test of legal inquiry. On such a matter as " lands for the people" there should be entire unanimity of sentiment at any i meeting, irrespective of the convener.
