AUCKLAND.
This day. The City of Cork and Tongariro raced today to Brown's Island. Both got away at" five minutes past twelve. The former with a slight lead passed the light-house at 12 20, when the. Tongariro drew away, reaching Brown's Island in thirty ♦ seven minutes. The Tongariro won by. four minutes .and a half. The bearings of the Tongariro were red hot. Men were engaged pouring water to prevent a fire. The Tongariro returned slowely. Ifc is generally believed the City of Cork would have won if to the Thames, the Tongariro not being able to steam the distance fast without danger. The Prince of Wales Hotel, Russell, Bay of Islands, has been burnt. Some Btook and furniture were saved. The House was insured in the Norwich Union for £300, and the house, stock and furniture for £750 in the Standard.
The Governor goes to Waikato on Monday, and will probably open the Ohaupo railway.
