ANTI-IMMIGRATION.
(To the Editor of the Eteniko Stab.)
Sir,—-The news by the last mail is the most horrible I hare ever read, and should sicken any man to read about. Thou* aands of people starving in Snn Francisco, millions starring in China—children bciug sold in the open'market for food. Yet all the world wants to orerpopulate erery couutry.. The Governments of Australia, New Zealand, or any other country, if I nm to believe what I read, "are not satisfied till they bring the people iv such numbers into the different countries that it is impossible for them to .lire withoutyetting into debt, and then, as a natural I-consequence, they are forced to lire from ! hand to mouth. Sir, it cannot be said the use of intoxicating drinks is the cause of the selling of children in China for I food, as Chinamen are noted for their | sobriety ; neither can it be attributed to the want of education, for, accord* ing to learned writers, the Chinese are better educated than most Europeans, as a rule. * Yet we hare, as a fact, in a country where the people do not use beer as a beverage, and where the people are educated, and where there is an enormous population, the people of that country selling their children for food. In this country the cry is raised—we want more population ; we want the lands opened; we want, manhood suffrage. The cry ii raised of wanting ererything excepting what will enable the people to get'a Hring independent of the Government by stopping immigration. We hare the fact of "thousands of acres of land uncultivated —I ought to say millions —in America, and of people starring and wanting to immigrate here, where we are continually hearing of people being out of work, of seeing recorded bankruptcies and failure! that will compare with older countries, and yet the New Zealand Government, the Australian and, no doubt, the Califor* nian Governments will still continue emigration while they can extract a penny out of the unfortunate dupes, or keep tbemselres in power at their expense.— I am, &c, Pbo Boko Poblico. PS—Sir Grey intends to introduce manhood, suffrage. : While immigration lasts it will be merely a bait to catch rotes, for while! the labor market is swamped, our rulers know they can buy all the rotes wanted. P.B.P.
