DEATH OF KING VICTOR EMMANUEL.
Afer a sudden and seren illness of a few day the King of Italy died on Jan. 9. The fallowing are a few particulars of this sad and important erent. On Jan. 9 the foltowiug official bulletin waj issued at 8 a.m.:—" The King's condition changed '-or the wone daring the night. The difficulty of respiration and the irregularity of the pulse increased and symptoms of miliury eruption are now observed." At; 2.27 p.m. the latent bulletin on the condition of the King announced that *' His Majesty is in a rery serious state. The miiiary eruption is ▼cry profuse." The last bulletin, issued in the afternoon, staled that " King Victor Emmanuel expired at half-past two o'clock." The Minister of the interior imme« diatclj issued a Circular to the prefects
throughout the kingdom announcing the death of King Victor Kmunnuel, and stating His Majesty King Humbert, having nscended to the throne under tho title of King Humbert IV., had confirmed the existing Ministry in their posts. On Jan. 9, in the morning, Victor Emmanuel had a long and affectionate conversation with Prince Humbert and Princess Margherita. The King received the sacrament from the hands of the Eev. Cavalier Anzino, his priva'e chaplain, and when flic latter hud retired, Prince Humbert again entered the room along with the Princess. The Kincr took him by the hand, and, looking fondly at him, pronounced one word, " AdtHol' 1 and followed him with his eyes us he went out crying bitterly. The King did not send <o the Vatican for a priest, but Monsignors Marinelli and Conni were sent from the Vatican to the Quirinal with tho Papal benediction. Pius IX. is said to have exclaimed that, but for his infirmity, he would hare gone himself to render the last services of religion to the dying King. King Victor Kmrnanuel died in full possession of his senses. Immediately the news was known, every shop in Borne was closed, the streets became crowded with people, and a general aspect of a great calamity having befallen the country seemed visible everywhere. All the Jiublic offices we're at once closed. His ale Majesty was born on March 14, 1820 jmd was the son of ( harles Albert, King <?f Sardinia, and Queen Theresa, daughter of Ferdinand Grand Duke of Tuscany.
