The Liberated Fenians and Dr Croke.
The following letter from the Archbishop of Cashel (Dr CrokeJ appeared in The Nation of January 19th. Considering that the Fenians were under the ban of the Church, from Cardinal Cullen downwards, the letter of Dr Croke is significant:— Thurlei, Januaiy 15th, 1878. ' My Dear Mr Gray,— I shall aek you to take charge of the en* closed cheque for £5, and to hat* it added in due course to the fund which I am glad to see is being collected for the benefit of the Irish political prisoners, whom the Ciar has just released- from British dungeons. They suffered long and inuoh for the patriotic faith that was in them, and the country for which they forfeited elevrn years of freedom is not likely to b« unmindful, of their protracted captivity, and privations. Poor McCarthy's death presents one of the most tr* ;ic incidents in this tad and sickening episode of our history ; und I bolieve uo true Irishman, at lietnr or itbroart, can read it without sympathy, or reflect on it without indignation.—l re* main, 4c, , + T. W. OSOKI.
