THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR P.M. Ressurexi. THURSDAY, MARCH 14, 1878.

Aw application has been made by tbe Chairman of the Harbor Board to Sir George Grey for the services of Sir John Cbodo 'to visit and report upon the Thames Harbor. It is eminently desirable that before the Harbor Board engage in any expenditure for harbor improvement some professional opinion should be obtained as to where the permanent works Should be, and the visit of Sir John Ooode to the Colony will afford an opportunity not 'often offering, that of obtaining an opinion from one who stands at the head of his profession as a marine and consulting engineer. At present there is great diversity of opinion even amongst members of the Harbor Board as to what locality should be preferred in improving the port. Tararu is much regarded by some, while others assert that Kopu must eventually become the real harbor of the district. Others would like to see the wharves extended until they nearly bridge the gulf—going put to meet the water instead of bringing the w.ater into the wharves. These.conflicting opinions should be all set at rest by a report from Sir John Coode. •Individual interests must be subordinated to the public weal. We trutt to hear scon that the Government have included the Thames in the list of harbors to be visited by Sir, John Coodo on his tour through the Colony.
