Thurndfly. Several deputations waited on Sir George Grey to-day—one from the merchants and importers relative to the bonus on rabbit-skins, pointed out how that the £500 on the estimates was miserably in. sufficient to meet claims already established, and that the Act distinctly provided for a halfpenny per skin. Sir George Grey promised to consider tbe question. A deputation from the Bluff Harbour Board also waited on the. Premier about Sir John Coode's visit Sir George Grey said Sir John Cooae had been engaged for a lump sum by the Australian Governments, and if New Zealand desired to beneGt by his advice they would have to pay pro rata, and he thought the cost to the colony; would not exceed £1500, or about £300 each for the harbours to be inspected. He also thought it ought to be made a colonial question. In that case the Assembly would pass the amount, but if not, he considered the various harbours would be responsible. A deputation from the Winton district re the two branch railways to the Nightcap Coal Reserves, and also one from Winton to Olautu, the deputations presented their requisition, which Sir George Grey promised to con* eider with his colleagues. A deputation from the Invercargill Town Council about sundry local matters, notably re water supply. Sir George Grey promised to send one of the Government engineers, provided his expenses were paid by the Council.
Cecil Jackson, late surgeon at the Invcrcargill hospital, appeared on remand to hear the decision of the Court, and was committed to take his trial on the charge of procuring abortion. Bail was accepted, in four sureties of £250 each, and himself in £500.
