' Wednesday. The boarding house destroyed by fire this morning was owned by Mr Buchanan, of Welling'on, and was insured for £430 in the Victoria office. Mr Bird, who occupied the building, was uninsured end estimates his loss at £300. Two boarders lost property to the value of £103. The fire is supposed to have resulted from a defect in the building near the chimney. This day. • Entries for the Canterbury Ram and Ewe Fair :—R-ms, 2385; ewes, 2301.
Yesterday at the Wesleyan anniversary services, Dr Gervase Smith, representative of the British Conference, was present, and received an address of welcome. The receipts at yesterday's and the Sunday's services exceeded £900.
Further enquiries show the insurances on the late fire to be ; Union, £600 on the building; Victoria, £400 on tbe fur* niture.
