WELLINGTON
Tuesday. The new Government offices had a narrow escape, from fire this afternoon. A clerk sitting in one of the rooms belonging to the Native Department, was alarmed by a smell of smoke, and roused the messengers, who in about a minute had the hose ready, and upon chopping through the woodwork, which was found very much - charred, inside, the fire was found to have originated in a corner between the first flat and the ground, but how hag not been ascertained.
Mr Barton.. JIH.K., was released from gaol to-day. There was no demonstration.
Patrick Shine,previously convicted at Auckland and Wanganui, and Thomas Maher, were committed for a robbery at Elliott's Hotel, Pakuralahi. Frederick Catlin, for a criminal assault on Selina Franklin at the Lower Hutt, was also committed for trial at the next criminal siftjngj. _____
