I Monday. Jabcz Hcaseman, a guard on tlie Southern Kuilway, lind a narrow escape from death on Saturday evening. Heaseman, Thomas Williams, and Oate Butler were travelling with a step-brother between Timaru and Christ church, and when near Dunsandel Butler became excited, asserting that he hnd been robbed. His step-brother sent for the guard, and told him that Butler was deranged, and that he had a loaded revolver in the bag between his knees. At this time JBatler had his rlriht hand ia the bag, and looked very excited. Hcasemanasked Butler to let him take the bag into the luggage Tan, when Eutler immediately pulled the revolver out and sbpt at Heaseman. The latter felt a smorS blow op his left side, but nothing more. He seized Butler, and with the aid of the passengers took the revolver away, and bound him. Subsequently Hpaseman found that the bullet had struck him in tjje leifc side, but having a purse full of copper P^d silver coins in lis waistcoat pocket, the bullet was turned aside by them, aid {leas nman was saved from almost certain dppih. to take him there, but on reaching Duncdin Butler said lie would go to Canterbury, and also that thoro were a lot of bnd men and devils about him, and he would buy a revolver to keep them off. This his brother allowed him to do.
