The two boxes of Ameiican white flsh ova, coiitainig 20,000, which had been presented io Canterbury by the Government, arrived by the Californian mail, and turned out a dead failure, not more than twelve ova out of the 20,000 being alire. Many had already hatch".l out. Mr Farr, secretary of the Acclimatisation Society, is of opinion that there was 100 much moss employed, and (bat the ova were killed by Us weight. He at once telegraphed to Dr Hector, at Port Chambers, recommending him not to proceed to Lake A nan, near the Bluff (where the doctor proposri to liberate 20,000 ova) without first examining the boxes in his charge. At a special meeting of the City Council held last evening, it was stated that Mr Cuff, the City Assessor, had undervalued the properties of the City by a greivt many thousand pounds. The Mayor stated that the Valuator had been heard to say, ■' It would not pay him for the snke of £50 to rise the value of his clients' property." The Council resolved to make objections to a large number of the assessments as made by the Valuator.
