We hear that there is every probability, now that Mr A. Aitken has resigned, of Mr J. M. McLaren beinj appointed Mining Inspector. It is said that Warden Fraser has recommended the amalgamation of the office with that at present filled by Mr McLaren. It is probable, however, that during next session of Parliament an amendment will be made of the Goldmining Districts Act, when the office of Mining Inspector will be divested of its judicial functions, and modo simply executive. The changes contemplated by the Government in this direction will, it ia said, embrace the erection of a Mining Department under tho control of a responsible Minister, with a Mining Inspector for each Island. These changes, we believe, will be carried out without any unnecessary delay after Parliament meets, and any arrangement made at present will probably be only temporary, and because necessitated by the existing state of affairs and the powers vested in the Inspector by the Mining Districts Act.
