THE HAPE CREEK COMPANY.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)
Sib, —Touching the sale of the Hape Creek Company, which is to come off tomorrow (Friday), I cannov, for the life of me, mako it out. With a large area of ground, which has proved itself goldbearing and profitable at a reasonable depth from surface, and after erecting the necessary gear, Ac, &c, and never made an attempt to work the ground, not even to bail a bucket of water out of the shaft, it certainly wants explaining. When business people and others have been pulled into a thing, and paid three calls, others have been allowed to hold large numbers of shares, and, if I am informed right, have not paid more than one call, which, Lad they done so, would have been ample to have given the thing a fair trial. These gentlemen are supposed to be leading the Thames on to prosperity, but I think the sooner the Government or the County Council give them a piece of land in the Piako or Te Aroha to settle down quietly, the better for us all.—l am, Ac, Shabeholdeb. Parawai, Feb. 13th, 1878.
