THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1878.
The ominous rumour communicated by Keuter's Telegram Agency, and published iv our issue today, is scarcely to be credited. It is trae the [Russians had some time ago possessed themselves of Adrianople, and the distance between that city and Constantinople is covered by a railway. But the Russians could not so soon have forced their way into the City of the Crescent. If the rumour be true that they have entered Stamboul, the entrance ■ must have been permitted by the Turks; but it seems impossible to suppose that it could have been effected by treachery, as was the footing inside Kars, or tacitly allowed by the Sublime Porte. Moreover, if it be true, and that the Bussians have been allowed to enter as conquerors, tho question arises^ what will Great Britain do P 11 British interests " must be protected, it has been said, and it would seem that the time for action is rapidly approaching.
