I The usual monllilj meeting of the Comj mittee of this institution was held at the i Salutation Hotel at 4 o'clock yesterday • afternoon. There were present —Mr J. ! Frater (President), tiers, ft, S. Bunn, • Y. Lush, Father Chastagnon,,and S. J. j'Ncill; Messrs Miller, McGowau, Mullil^an, Power and McCullough. MINUTES.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. ■ . • . HOUSE SUr.OEON'* BEPOBT. The report or the House Surgeon was read as follows :— " Monthly report of state of Thames Gold fields Hospital.—l have the honor to report for the information of the Committee that on the 31st of December ultimo there remained in the Hospital 17 patients. That during the month of January there were 19 admissions; 11 patients were discharged; 1 died r<- and upon the, 31st of January 21 patients remained under treatment, while during the month 62, out-patients were treated dt the Hospital^ Analysing the cases in the house,.them are 4 cases,fracture, 2 tronchitjs,r2 paralysis, 1' rheumatism, 1 eh.' enciphalitis, 1 softening of brain, 1 aibuminaria, .2 haemorrhage, 1 .hearty disease, 1 injury from explosion, 1 pleurisy, 2 wounds, 1 hepatitis, 1 enteritis: 'The death was from consumption in a patient who had only been 24 hours in Hospital.— Wm. A? Pbestow, M.D., House" Surgeon.''. ; . " 1 The report was adopted on the motion of Mr Ehreufried, seconded by ,Mr Miller. '. .
HOUSE COMMMTBE'S BSFOST.
The report of the House Committee was read as follows:—"The House-Com-•uiittee hare the honor to report that daring the month the Hospital was ■ regularly visited. : The'want of a dining roon, which has been mentioned, can be supplied by a s partition- bet ween the: room used as a library and a small one adjoining being' removed, and both rooms thrown into one. With a very small cost the room can be made available tor the' purpose of a dining room; and,* being adjoining the principal * road; is most conveniently situated. .A small room is required for the purpose of keeping splints, bandages, trusses,, ond othec. appliances, aud it is suggested a portion of the eajt verandah be taken for. this pur* poae. The accounts for the month amount to £67 9s 2d, and salaries to £65 7s, which hare been examined, and are recommended for payment.—W.McCuilough." ; The report was'received on the motion of the Kf v. V. Lush. ' . Mr Gudgeon asked if the House Com* mittee had had instructions concerning' the erection of a dining hall. The President said they had received no instructions in the matter. The din* ing hall was much required, and. if the suggestion was carried out a: very comfortable room could be made. It would be about 20 feet long and 11 feet brood. I The dispenser kept his splints in one' of the rooms, and it was suggested to con-, •tract a small room for them on the! •astern verandah. . . ■. -- ; .■ Mr -fifcCullough said this would be a great advantage, as at present the splints and other appliances were kept in a room as far as it could well be from the accident ward.
The llev. V. Lush suggested that the small room erected for fever patients might be moved bodilj up to the accident ward, arid used as a receptacle for the more bulky surgical appliances. ■', .: The President said that would exclude the light from the dispenser's room.' r Mr-McCullough moved, and Mr Power seconded, that the. work be carried oat under the authority of the House Com* mittee. : tbeasubeb's bepobt. This read as follows :—Beceipts—To balance cash, £163 13s Id ; balance in bank, £251 9s 6d ; subscriptions, £2615; donations, £3 19s 9d; patients' charges, £6 13s 6d; benefits, £110s—£4440s lOd. Expenditure — By salaries, £51 175.; , maintenance, £36 3s sd; nrdical comforts, £4; furniture, 10s 3d; miscellaneous expenses, 14s 2d; commission, £L 10s; drugs and appliances, £7 19s 9d; balance in Bank of .New Zealand, £338 , Gs 3d—£444. Os lOd. Liabilities —To salaries, £65 7s; general, £67 9s 2d; balance. £542 3s 5d — £674 19s 7d. Assets—Ey balance Bank of -New Zealand, £338 6s 3d ; Government grant due,. £336 13s 4d—£674 19s 7dr . . The. adoption of the report was carried on the motion of Mr Miller. . - APOLOGUES. Apologies for absence were received ; from Messrs Hinton, Mcllhone, and Comer. = - ■ ■". < APPLICATIOK FOB IKCBKASB OF SALARY. . A letter was read from Mrs Tbewlis, nurge, asking for an .increase of salary. Mr Power'moved tliat the matter be referred to the House Committee. , - Mr Gudgeon seconded. • . - Mr McGowan said rtijat he thdught the Con.mittee could de-1 with the matter. There were only four female patients to look after,' and he thought ' that they should decide the matter at ;Tue Eev. V. Lush coincided with Mr McGowan. ■ ■ m , . Mr Ehrenfricd thought that if the applicant was a qualified nurse she was at least entitled to as much salary as a cook; The President said that they had never paid more than 15s per week. The resolution was carried. HOUSE COMMITTEE. The following arc the House Committee for . the ensuing month: — Messrs Aitkcu, Abier, llensuaw, and Poorer. QOVEBNMENT SUBSIDY. . The SccreUry-said that application had been made' in the usual wanner for the subsidy, but no money had yet come to hand.. • • . Mr Ehrenfried suggested that the Secretary, under the directions of the President, write another letter on the subject to the Government. This was all the business.
" The penalty of'walking on & railroad track in England is ten pounds," said one while discussing the numerous fatal accidents on a rnilroad. " Pooh ! " replied Jerry, '* is that all ? The penalty in this country is death.".
