Accident at the Piako.
An accident, affording another illustration of the dangerous nature of the Piako shaft, happened on Monday night to a man named Emerson., employed in a contract in that mine. From h's statement it appears that Emeison, wishing to sco a mate of his in the contract, went down the sbaft at about 7 o'clock. When near the bottom some men 1 below rang for the cage to come up, which it did. It was then, lowered and stoppad in a few feet, and Emerson was convinced it had stuck in the shaft. He shook the cage, but as the slack chain and rope was coming into the cage, he took a firm grip of the cross bar, and immediately after the cage fell about 15 feet/pitching him violently against the side of the shatt, and then again he fell into the cage. He reached the; bottom in safety, and was then taken up to the surface and conveyed home. On medical aid being called it .was found that the leg, was broken near the ancle, while the latter is badly sprained and bruised, as also is the lower part of the back. How the man escaped seems a miracle.
