GOVERNMENT ASSAYER.
(£a the Editor of the Evening Star.)
Stb, —In your article headed "Our Mines" that appeared in your issue of Saturday last you say, "There is good reason to believe 'now that a rigorous effort is about to be nude by tributers, small shareholders and others interested in the appointment of a Government assayer, and that it is intended to hold a public meeting here within the next few days, &c , &c." Will you allow me to point out that such action is, indeed, unnecessary, as bis Worship the Mayor, when in Auckland on the Tuesday previous to ths date of your paper quoted, urged this subject on the Government* and obtained an assurance from the Hon. the Premier, and the Hon. the Natire Minister,' that not only would a ' Gorernment assayer be appointed, but that a School of Mines will be established at the Thames as-soon as possible.—'Yours, &c, P. C. Dbaw. [We are very glad to he ir it. We saw no report of any deputation on the abore subject.—Ed.]
