THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. MONDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 1878.

Thk County Chairman, Mr A. Brodie, has addressed a circular telegram to the Piako and Waikato Counties, suggesting a conference of the three counties at Hamilton on the 14th and 15th of this month, for the purpose of discussing a number of subjects in which the three counties are interested. These would embrace the proposed Thames and Waikato Bailway, to connect this district with the main trunk line at Hamilton, or some other convenient spot; a permanent system of roads and bridges connecting tho several counties; and the advisability of asking Parliament, during its next session, for some compensation in lieu of subsidy which would accrue were the large tracts of Native lands not exempt from taxation. It is also intended, we believe, to invite the co-operation of the Borough of Thames; and as the Borough of Hamilton will before the time suggested have had a Mayor and Councillors elected, their assistance will also probably be requested. The dates fixed for the conference are race days, during which many people will assemble in Hamilton ; but were it otherwise we have confidence that the several County Councils are sufficiently impressed with the importance of the subjects to be considered to induce them to put in an appearance. The Thames, Piako and Waikato Counties must of necessity have interests in common, and it is a judicious move to establish friendlyrelationsatonce. Even if there were no immediate prospects of the railway being constructed, there would be a greater necessity for gome united action regarding the formation of permanent roads, for it would be sheer folly for each County to initiate its own system, regardless of its neighbors. One County might fancy one route ; another another. One County might even decide to bridge a river or creek at one point, and its neighbor be duplicating the cost by bridging the same stream lower down or higher up, as the case might be. As the idea of the conference has origi■ated with the Thames County Chairman, we give him credit for it, and we trust the Piako and Waikato Chairmen and Councillors will heartily co-operate in promoting the several object! contemplated.
