The New Tararn School.
The opening of the new Tararu School took place this morning at about 11 o'clock. It had been intended to open the school at 10 o'clock, but considerable delay was occasioned by waiting for the Waiotahi School Committee who, however, failed to turn up. At 11 o'clock, therefore, it was determined to proceed with business, Mr Thorburn, Chairman of the Tararu Bchool Committee, taking the chair. There were over 100 childrenboys and girls—present, and amongst the ladies and gentlemen present we noticed Messrs Hughes, Wick, Steedman, Wolff, Fricker, Mesdames Fraser, Wick, Thorburn and several others. The whole of the teaching staff were also in attendance as under—Mr Halliwell, Head Master; Misses Gott and Bowen, Assistants; and Misses Jones, Truscott and Joslin, Junior Assistants. The Chairman made a brief speech on the benefits of having the Tarara and Shellback schools amalgamated, and exhorted the children to punctuality and diligence. He then formally declared the school opened. Mr F. B. Hughes read the telegrams which had passed.between the Board and the School Committee in relation to, the transfer of the Shellback School to the Tararu district, and also one authorising the Committee to open the School teday. Mr Halliwell (head master) then addressed the scholars, urging them to do their duty conscientiously, and attend the school punctually. He referred to the increased powers given to the teachers by the new Education Act in maintaining the discipline of their schools. Mr Steedman, a member of the School Committee, referred briefly to the amalgamation of the two schools, which he considered would be of advantage to all concerned. He addressed a few words to the children respecting their conduct, both in and ont of school.
The children were then dismissed, to assemble again on Monday, and in going out were each given a handful of cake And lollies.
