GOLDEN POTNT (TAIRUA).

I learn with pleasure, that an old Thames prospector hat had a stroke of luck in the above claim, situated at Tftirua, near the Pkoaoix. For a. long time he and his mates have been fossicking about and prospecting their claim, and portions of. the. alluvial, toil .hare been gone over with shovel and dish, and have giren splendid prospects of .fine gold. Some weeks ago the shareholders started sinking a shaft on the hill side near the gully, where some jears ago the brothers Wood obtained several ounces; of nuggets of pure gold. The other day when the shaft had reached the depth of about 36 feet, a gravelly bottom' was struck, which, on being sunk through,, was found to be what the finders call ah alluvial lode. The layer is composed of gravel and smal^ pieces of, quart z, and a number of tests have, convinced the shareholders that it is rich in the precious metal, though from its fineness vo save it effectually requires careful manipulation. The small pietes of quartz on being washed are frequently found" to be regular little auriferous, specimens, and when the Phosniz battery is started there is no aoubt but that the mine will hare a fair trial. There is a • puddling machine and other appliances on the ground. I may add that this claim is the one referred to in the first paragraph of a letter from a correspondent at Tairua, which appears in another part of this issue.
