THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. SATURDAY, JANUARY 19, 1878

Mb Sutton has received a vote of thanks and confidence from a large public meeting in Napier after his post-sessional utterance. Mr Sutton was a consistent opponent of the present administration, and a supporter of Major Atkinson's party while they remained in office. A few weeks ago Sir George Grey and a colleague received an ovation at the hands of the Napier people; who now express confidence in a man who would have kept tho Premier and the Native Minister and their following from office. Mr Sutton belonged to the party of successful men in Hawke's Bay whose land transactions have called into existence what is known as the Repudiation Party, of whom Mr Shechan was the legal representative. It is evident from these things that asyet there has not been created a healthy public opinion in Napier, so much desired, and so warmly inculcated in the fervid orations of the Premier. Mr Sutton has secured a vote of confidence as well as thanks, while some representatives who were always found supporting the present Government have been but coldly received, and thanks only grudgingly tendered. But it cannot be expected that a healthy public opinion will be suddenly created: electors and communities will continue to stultify themselves.
