The Morning Advertiser (London) recently published the following particulars of a piece of red tapeism at Melbourne not very creditable to the authorities there:—A young man, a midshipman in the naval reserve, was killed on board his vessel, at Melbourne, at Christmas, 1875 Notice being given to the authorities, an official was sent to take possession of the deceased's things. Notice was sent to the boy's mother, in England, and in 1876. a form was forwarded here to fill up to enable her to get the articles. The form was returned filled up at once, but in October it was sent back to Kngland with a notification that the lady's age was omitted. This was rectified, and the form once more returned to the antipodes. Months passed without anything further being heard. Inquiries by the boy's brother elicited the reply that correspondence was going on. In the middle of this year the mother, tired of. waiting, gave a power of attorney to a friend going to Melbourne to obtain her son's effects, the whole of which were well worth £50. About the time her friend arrived in Melbourne the lady received a notification from the Board of Trade that her son's things bad been sold in Melbourne for £1 13s 6d, but certain charges reduced the sum to £1 8s 3d, and that she would be paid that amount if she produced the necessary vouchers. The sequel to this tule as narrated in the Morning Advertiser is that the things were either lost or stolen whilst in charge of the Custom-house authorities at Melbourne.
