THE WEEK.
In contrast with its immediate prede- I cessors, tlie week now drawing to a close has not been an ur.eventful one in the I mining world. There hare been some signs of life exhibited by the sharebrokers, and we have experienced the novelty of seeing lome of their quotations. The Alburnia attracts considerable attention through nn improvement having taken place iv the low level, while the intermediate level holds out as good prospects as hitherto. The Moanatairi, although it is doing nothing brilliant, is still a favorite stock, and from the many works in progress, any hoar may see another rich patch to hand. Last week's review chronicled the seizure by creditors of the Queen of the May; this week it was sold, the Queen of Beauty being the purchasers. '1 his company has thus absorbed all the Waio-Karaka mines except the Piako, and has in a manner commenced the scheme of general amalgamation, frequently recommended in these columns, though it may be added the means that would be used to bring it about was never suspected. The Beauty will , have a heavy burden' to bear in the shape of drainage contributions, but it is to be hoped that she will be able to bear them. Whilst at the Waio-Karaka it may be mentioned that the Piako may shortly be expected to resume crushing operations, as the trial crashing at the Queen of Beauty has proved satisfactory. A discovery of some importance has been made in the the Nonpareil United Company's mine, in the shape of a series of auriferous leaders. This, however, has been referred to at length in the daily reports, and need not be further commented on here. It may be said, however-—as there has been a rumour going about town that the gold is in the Central Italy ground—that if the plans are correct the gold is fully 40 feet from the Central Italy boundary, and, as the underlie is very slight, the latter stands a very small show of getting the leader.
