MASTERTON

Thursday. A fearful gale swept over Masterton and its neighborhood yesterday morning.

Nearly all the shop windows on the east

side of Bridge street were broken. Many ohimneys were blown, down, and the roof of an unfinished building was carried several chains away. In parts of the neighborhood the bush looks as if cut down by hand. Two houses were burnt down, and two were blown over. Lowe's Bailway Hotel narrowly escaped, and all the furniture had been removed when s» heavy rain commenced to fall.

The crops are still standing, and much damaged, especially oats. No gale equal in severity has been felt here before. Carterton fared as bad as Masterton.
