SIR JULIUS VOGEL ON NEW ZEALAND.
The Times; commenting on the speech of Sir Julias Vogel at the dinner given by the Colonial Bank of New Zealand, waxes merry at the expense of that colony and of its late Prime Minister. Possibly Sir Julias may have drawn a picture iomewhat too rosey-hued, but yet he had good grounds for speaking with pardonable pride of the prosperity of the rising country he represents. New Zealand already cultivates, as Sir Julias Vogel pointed out, as much land:aa all its immediate neighbours put together. Her lines of railroad, 800 miles long, bring in a clear net income. Her wool trade is rapidly increasing, and her mineral wealth is as yet but half explored. She may be weighted by a national debt, but it is one, and here again we quote Sir Julius, which has been incurred in the development of national resources; not in aggressive or defensive war, and in it are included many burthens which at home are borne by the local rates; Making due deduction for the patriotic partisanship of an orator descanting upon his native land, there can be no question that much re-mains-to substantiate what Sir Julius Vogel has said. The progress of New Zealand is a fact which cannot be denied, although the Times may sneer at the glowing periods in which it was described.
