THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. FRIDAY, JANUARY 4, 1878.

We would urge upon lbe Borough Council tbe absolute necessity of giving their immediate and careful attention to the state of the drainage in tho Borough. The water tables and drains in some of the principal streets are in such a bad stale that unless they are looked to and thoroughly cleansed some disease may be expected to make its appearance any clay. The stench arising from these places during the hot weather is abominable, and the residents iv some neighborhoods have already been afflicted with sickness which is believed to be clearly traceable to these drains. About a month ago this matter was brought under the notice of tbe Council by letters from several citizens, and Councillors discussed the question at considerable length, finally resolving that in the cases particularly referred to wooden water-tables should be made if the residents would contribute towards the cost. Since that we have heard little or nothing of the matter, but the evil has gone on increasing and now presents a serious aspect. It may be well to remind Borough Councillors that the health, of the inhabitants is no secondary consideration. Some expenditure in the direction of improving the drainage and removing the nuisauces which exist in the streets, would be more conducive to the comfort of tho inhabitants than even good roads and level footpaths. At any rate it is an unwise policy to neglect ordinary precautions, and tacitly encourage tho breeding of diseaso by permitting the existence of such abominable nuisances as may be found in the water tables and drains in our streets. The Foreman of Works should be instructed to prepare a special report on this matter, in order that preventive measures may be adopted before it gets tro late.
