THE WEEK.

To-day are published the monthly returns of gold from the Thames and Coromandel fields, and also the return showing the amounts to hand for the week. These gold returns are given in separate forms and in their entirety in order that readers who watch the course of events may compare notes without difficulty, and arrive at the average weekly return without being compelled to pick out the items of gold returns which hare come to hand this week. It will be seen that there is an increase this month, but it will also be seen that this arises from the improvement in the Moanatairi yield. _ It would scarcely be expected that this mine could keep up the yields it has giren, and as the works during the last week or so have been merely progressive, it is_ no wonder that there has been .little doing. Caledonians have occupied some attention, and the only reason to account for tbis seems to be that in breaking down the reef that has to be taken out shortly there will be found good gold, probably rich gold. It may be that thfe lode will be found to be a continuation of the payable reef worked in the Otagb, or it may be a fresh opening of the eld Caledonian I lead. At any rate the. fact remains that from some cause or other the old familiar stock have taken a spurt*
