"The Lay of the Bell."

This cantata was performed at the Academy of Music, last night by the members of the choir of St. George's Church, the accompaniments being rendered by Mr Trewheela, pianist, and a string band under the leadership of Mr Stewart. There was a very large attendance, every part of the house being well filled, and punctually at eight o'clock the curtain rose and the performance commenced. Mr Charles Brown sustained the principal solos amongst the male voices, and sang very well. There was a degree of nervousness exhibited by all the soloists which somewhat: detracted from their powers, but the rendition of the very pretty music which the composition embraces was very creditable. The burden of the solos was pretty well divided amongst the ladies, and were all very sweetly rendered. We refrain from any detail of the various parts. The composition was very attentively listened to throughout, but there was no boisterous applausenor any encores, and the piece occupied barely an hour in. its performance. The National Anthem closed the concert: Mr Grigg conducted, and did it effectively. A dance was held after the concert to which a large number remained, and enjoyed it most thoroughly. The concert should be a financial success. , ..• „ ..-,■:■' :. - ... . .. ■ ,■;„-. ,;,/." ;-- '. ■" .; ■." •
