HAPE CREEK GOLDMINING COMPANY AND THEIR CONTRACTS.

(To the Editor of the EyjSHIKG Stab.) Sib,—l tendered in the sum of £212 for the erection of poppet-heads, windinggear, &c, for the above company as advertised by you in several issues of your paper. A directors' meeting was called to open tenders for this work at 4 p.m. on Monday, June 18th. My tender was the lowest, but the directors could not agree to give it to me, though there was no clause in the specifications giving them any choice in the matter. They adjourned for further discussion until 7 o'clock next evening, when the job was given to a Mr Thompson, who did not on Monday, and not until after the tenders were opened, tender for the job at all. Dating from the earliest period of the history of these goldfields this is the dirtiest piece of partial jobbery that ever came under my notice, and as a breach of good faith to contractors generally, beats all. I irould adjrise E. McDonald Scott, Esq., to tear down the flimsy wooden partition and

erect a brick one between his office and the passage leading up to the Mayor's chambers, so that patient contractors while waiting the pleasure of directors and taking shelter from storms in this passage, may not hear the wisdom (P) and malice of Hape dogberries and others. Note. This letter exonerates Mr Carpenter.—l am, &c, Hen by R. Juey.
