OAMARU.
Friday. Yesterday a widow named Quarrie, residing at Oamaru, died suddenly. After death her eldest son Daniel disappeared, and was not heard of till this morning, when he gave himself up to the police at W actuate. A post mortem was held on the body. A jury was summoned for the inquest, when the police applied for a remand till Monday on the ground that the son Daniel said he had been the cause of his mother's death. The doctor, who made a post mortem, said the deceased died from a fracture of the skull. The inquest was adjourned till Monday, and in the meantime Daniel Quarrie will be brought down from Wai mate. The affair has created a painful sensation, as the Quarries have been resident here many years, snd were always - highly respected. For some years Mrs Quarrie has been addicted to drirking, and when in that state frequently irritated her son Daniel, who was always a quick-tem-pered boy, and when he saw his mother in drink it annoyed him very much. He is only about twenty years, and has been engaged for years with Mr Lane, the butcher.
