RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT

THIS DAY. -: . (Before W. Fraser, Esq., R.M.) "VAGBANCr. John Milton was charged with a breach of the Vagrant Act, by having no lawful visible means of support. - Defendant informed His Worship that he was now employed in teaching in a family in Mary street, and that he had better prospects for next week. ■: Mr Bullen said that the defendant had been making frequent visits to the houses of a number of respectable citizens, avowedly for the purpose of getting occupation as a tutor, but he had also repeatedly begged for money, which he (Mr Bullen) believed defendant spent in drink. The defendant had had several warnings from the police, but he did not appear to have regarded them. His Worship—ls it true that you spend your money in drink. •

Defendant—Oh, no. Mr Bullen said he did not wish to press the charge if the defendant would promise to discontinue going about all over the town begging. His Worship said he had every sympathy for those who were really in distress and looking for employment, but none for those who begged money and spent it in drink. Defendant said the police had never caught him drunk. His Worship said he would allow the case to be withdrawn, but if he (defendant) was again brought before him he would send him to Mount Eden without the least compunction. Charge accordingly withdrawn. ABUSIVE LANGUAGE.

Benata Kingi was charged with unlawfully using insulting and abusive language towards one Hohepa Kapene for the purpose of annoyance and provocation, on the 14th insfc. Defendant pleaded guilty. Mr Wilkinson was sworn as interpreter. Mr Dodd appeared for the plaintiff. Plaintiff in answer to the Bench said he had given no provocation. Mr.Wilkinson said the defendant had made use of some very offensive Maori phrases. Defendant was bound over to keep the peace for three months in his own security of £10, defendant having to pay the costs, which amounted to £119s 6d. This was all the business.
