CHRISTCHURCH.
Tuesday,
It is understood that the Hon. C. C. Bowen will decline to address his con-
stituents, on the ground of the shortness of the present visit, but will address them directly after the session.
The Lyttelton water supply works were tested last night with success. The water is obtained from an artesian well on the Christchurch side of the hills, pumped into a tank on one of the lower hills, and then carried along the railway line through the tunnel to nearly every part of the town by pipes.
A deputation waited upon the Hon. C. C. Bowen to suggest certain alterations in the Christchurch Drainage Act, the principal one being that the district should be divided into wards, so that each ward should be rated according to the works carried out in it. Thus, if costly deep sewers are required in a particular ward, that ward will pay for them, instead of, as would be the case under the Act as it now stands, all parts of the district paying an equal rate.
