The citizens ball last night, which was very successful, was held in the.Provincial Council chamber and library. There were upwards of 200 present, including the Governor, the Hon. C. C. Bowen, and the principal residents of the city and neighborhood.
The Georgia Minstrels opened at the Theatre Eoyal last night to a large house. The performance is favorably criticised.
A shearers union is being established here.
Sunday drinking is becoming very prevalent. In Court to-day the Inspector of Police said he was unable to find out who supplied the drink so freely on Sundays.
A deputation of Licensed Victuallers waited on the Hon. C. C. Bowen to suggest alterations m the Licensing Act, with a view of 12 o'clock and night licenses being granted in Christchurch ; also, allowing private entrances to remain open on Sundays. Mr Bowen said the suggestions were, reasonable, and he would bring them before the Government.
