THE KING OF SCOTS AND THE KING OF HEAVEN.

Truth and Progress gives, the following amusing story on the authority of the Liverpool Mercury. Bis either original,. or the Mercury has forgotten to quote its authority. Long ages ago, in times, so remote that history does not fix the epoch, a dreadful war was waged between the Kin^ of Cornwall and the King of Scot: land. Scottish valor prevailed, and; the King of Cornwall was defeated. The Scottish monarch, elated by success, sent for his Prime Minister, Lord Alexander. "Weel, Sandy," said he, "is there ne'er a king we canna conquer the noo ? " " An' it please your ,M»jesty, T ken but o' se king that your Majesty canna vanquish." ... : " . j, "An* whaun is he, Sandy P " LordAlexander, reverently looking up, said, " The King of Heaven." . The Scottish king did not understand, but was unwilling to exibit any ignorance.. "Just gang yer ways, Sandy, and tell the king o' Heeven to gi'e up his dominions, or I'll come mysel' and ding him ootofthem; and mind, Sandy, ye do not come back till us ontil ye ha'e done oor bidding." Lord Alexander retired much perplexed, but met a priest, and reassured* returned and presented himself. " Weel Sandy," said he king, .'■' ha'e yae seen the King o' Heeven, and what says he to oor bidding?" "An' it please your Majesty, I ha'e no seen "the king himself, but I ha'e seen ane o'his accredited ministers." " Weei, an' what: says he ? " "He says your Majesty may c'en ha'e-his kingdom for the asking o' it." "Was he sac ceevil?" said the king, warmed to magnanimity ; "just gang yer ways back, Sandy, and tell the-King- of Heeven that for his ceevility the de'il a Scotchman shall e'er set foot in his kingdom."
