WORK BY TENDER.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)
Sib, —I should much like to know on what principled the work undertaken by the County Council is let to contractors. I have repeatedly applied for work, but been told that all the work was let by " public tender." Nevertheless, lam perfectly sure tbat several contracts have been let without the least open competition, the men clearing £2 5s per week, and getting a draw of £10 on the strength of the next contract, which was also- let privately; not to mention the big fellow at Punga Flat working away for the last two months, and another party of wages men have a " nursery job " —trying to blast rock for the formation of the Taupo track. - They have, no,doubt, the best job of the lot. Perhaps the chair*: man or some, of the members of the"" Board or any out-sider can explain these * apparently secret proceedings. Ufa dquljt ■-. if I belonged to tho Order of Freemasons. I, too, should not haye been refused a job. . —I am, &c, Faib Play, Thames, June 7th, '77>
