WHAT HAS HE DONE?
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)
Sib,—l fully expected that your issue of Saturday would have contained a reply to that very admirable letter of " A Citizen " in your issue of Friday evening, which contained.the above question, and which I now repeat :<—What on earth has the Rev. Hill done that such a stir should* be made because of his departure from "our -midst ?■ After a careful perusal of your last issue I was much disappointed to find that not one of those very officious gentlemen that have been buzzing about these days past, collecting from all and sundry subscriptions towards the purse that is to be presented i"as a mark of respect" to the rev. gentleman referred to, had deigned to offer a word in reply to ",Citizen's" 'epistle. A friend at my. elbow'suggests that the rev. gentleman himself will "tell us all about it" on the evening of the presentation; and that he wll likely afterwards hand over the amount collected and presented to the Thames Hospital. I hope so, and I hope too that Mr Hill does not for one moment, supposethat Mi > •• whole amount" subscribed has bon given out of pure respect for him, for I can assure him that such is not > the fact. I have heard more than one tradesman express themselves to the effect that had they not have been in business they would not hare given a copper. Your correspondent refers to Father Nivard and Mr Severn as having left their mark behind, them, and; yet on their departure received no acknowledgment for the services they had rendered this community. Yes, and there are others equally worthy of whom scarce mention has been made on their leaving us. Then why this fuss because of the departure of one that has not done, to say the most, more than his duty, and for which he has been well paid P It is my impression that the Thames would hare got on quite as well if the Eev. Hill had never seen it, or it the Eev. Hill. Apologising for the liberty taken in troubling you with this.—l am, &c, ... Anothee Citizen. .
